Jarok As A Traitor Betrayer. Renegade. Mutineer. Defector. No matter how you say it, it all means the same thing: a traitor. I believe that Admiral Jarok from the episode "The Defector" from the third season of Star Trek the Next Generation is indeed a traitor. He betrayed his country and his family, disclosed secret information, and I intend to prove that he fits the definition of a traitor. The definition of a traitor according to Webster's New World Dictionary from 1994 is: a person who betrays his or her country, cause, or friends (1418). This definition is pretty vague, so to understand the concept of a traitor one must know the definition of betray. To betray is: to help the enemy of one's country or cause; to break faith with; fail to meet the hopes of; to disclose secret information or confidential plans (133). In the following paragraphs, I will analyze this definition and show how Admiral Jarok is a traitor. Jarok is a traitor in the political sense, regardless of his motives (to stop a war). By political I mean having to do with the Romulan government or empire. To betray one's country is to be a traitor, and Jarok betrayed the Romulan government by giving away top secret information. According to the storyline of Star Trek the Next Generation, the Romulans and the Federation are enemies. Picard and his crew are members of the Federation, and Jarok is a Romulan; therefore, Jarok and Picard are enemies. Jarok claims that he has discovered a plot for a new Romulan offensive, and he wants to help the Federation stop a possible war. By coming to the Federation to help them, he betrays the Romulans and is a traitor by "helping the enemy of one's country or cause." Jarok elaborates by telling Picard that the Romulans are building a base on Nelvana III, a planet in the Neutral Zone, and there are 21 Warbirds in orbit around her, just waiting to make a first strike. (Lynch 1995) Jarok announces that the Romulans will shortly launch a major offensive against the Federation. (Kernick 1993) At first he wouldn't give Picard the coordinates of the base, but Picard demanded proof. Jarok, beaten, gives all the information he can, including the location of the Romulan fleet and information about cloaking technology. (Tong 1994) Jarok betrays the Romulans by disclosing secret information or confidential plans. Jarok also breaks the faith with and fails to meet the hopes of the Romulans.

Case against Animal Experiments Based on Ethical Theories

Many millions of animals suffer and die every year in the name of science. How can this practice be justified? Public debate usually centers on the moral issues.Proponents of the practice argue that the benefits to humans of live animal research are so great that the practice is justified. Opponents argue that no matter what the benefits, the practice is morally odious. Rarely are the scientific benefits of the practice questioned, and when they are, the critique is underdeveloped.Brute Science fills a long neglected gap in the debate by offering an innovative analysis of the scientific benefits of animal research. Although they do discuss basic research, the main thrust of LaFollette and Shanks' argument is directed against applied biomedical research–in particular the use of animals to predict the courses of disease, the efficacy of new treatments, and any harmful side effects that might accompany the latter.The practice of testing new drugs and procedures on animals prior t o clinical trials is compulsory in many countries and arguably accounts for the greatest proportion of the live animals used in research.The term â€Å"animal rights† poses vexing definitional issues, and these issues are complicated by the imprecision with which the term is so often used. Many people loosely associate â€Å"animal rights† with the idea that people have a moral, legal, or custodial duty to treat animals humanely. Such a gloss allows the notion of rights for animals to appear mainstream and to elicit support across a broad spectrum.Peter Singer, who first articulated the ethical basis upon which much of the contemporary animal rights movement rests, prefers to avoid the use of the word â€Å"rights† altogether. â€Å"The language of rights is a convenient political shorthand† Singer wrote in his seminal book, Animal Liberation (Singer, n.p.).â€Å"It is even more valuable in the era of thirty-second TV news clips than it was in Jeremy Ben tham's day; but in the argument for a radical change in our attitude to animals, it is in no way necessary.† (Singer, n.p.)

During summer 2015, North Carolina beach towns became Amity Islands with the number of shark bites reported in June alone setting a new state record for the year. Its possible that  weather and climate  could have been to blame for the spike in shark activity. How, you ask?   Sharks Like It Saltier With Low Rainfall One weather type that impacts shark activity is rainfall, or rather, the lack thereof. Without rain falling into the ocean and diluting it with freshwater, the salinity (salt content) of ocean water close to shore becomes more concentrated, or saltier than usual. So anytime theres a dry spell or drought, sharks — which are salt-loving creatures — are drawn closer to shore in greater numbers. Hot Temperatures Tempt Us Into Their Territory Ocean waters are a sharks domain. Beaches are our summer vacation meccas. Beginning to see a conflict of interests? Summer holds the perfect storm of ingredients to bring sharks and humans together. But while summer alone encourages shark-human interactions, unusually hot summers generally guarantee it. Consider this... On an 85-degree day, you might be happy to lounge in the sand and take the occasional two-minute dip in the ocean to cool off. But on a 100-degree or hotter day at the beach, youre more likely to spend the entire day wading, swimming, and surfing in the waves just to keep cool. And if you, along with all the other beachgoers, are spending more time in the water, the chance of someone having a run-in with a shark just increased exponentially.   La Nià ±a Provides Feasts for Sharks A shift in wind patterns can also draw sharks to near-shore areas. For example, during La Nià ±a events, the trade winds strengthen. As they blow across the oceans surface, they push water away, allowing cold, nutrient-rich waters to rise from the ocean bed to the surface. This process is known as upwelling. The nutrients from upwelling stimulate growth of phytoplankton, which serve as food for small marine creatures and fish, like mullet and anchovies, which in turn are shark food. Keeping Your Beach Visit Shark-Free Besides being shark aware during periods of drought or reduced rainfall, heat waves, and during active La Nià ±a events, take these 5 simple precautions to reduce your risk even further:   Dont swim at dawn or dusk — the two times of day when sharks are most active.Dont go farther than knee-deep out into the ocean. (Sharks rarely swim in shallow waters.)If you have a cut or an open wound, stay out of the water. (Blood attracts sharks.)If you notice a lot of small bait fish swimming around, leave the water. Sharks feed on them and may be attracted to the area. Similarly, dont swim near fishing piers as sharks can be attracted to fishing bait and fish guts (from caught and cleaned fish).Keep out of the water when a marine life warning flag or sign is raised — no exceptions!
